Thai Tidbit
Noodles are a staple of street food in Thailand. Cheap, quick, easy to find, always steaming hot, noodles are served with a variety of soups and toppings. Fish balls are a popular topping, and in many noodle shops there are different types of fish balls, from fish sausages (Hue-Kuay in Thai), regular round fish balls, shrimp balls, fried fish balls, fish wontons… the tastes are endless!
This shop with noodle and fish ball is located between Charoen Nakorn Soi 6 and 8. Though there’s no name, the shop has been around for over 60 years from the first generation to the second generation. Customers pack the shop every day, and some days the fish balls would run out at 1 pm. The trick is in the true Chinese flavor of the noodle, with all the fish balls homemade, as well as the sweet and spicy dip. Let’s try the noodle!
The shop is located between Charoen Nakorn Soi 6 to 8, just 10 meters past the bridge over Charoen Nakorn 2 canal, and the shop is right on the main road, opposite from the sign for Charoen Nakorn Soi 5.
With only a handful of tables, it’s tricky getting a seat if you come at noon. The shop is open from 7 am to 2 pm, with irregular holidays. To check if they’re open, call 02-438-2871 before heading to the shop.
The shop has been serving noodles for over 60 years and now the second generation is running the show, with siblings helping out in the shop.
The best part about the fish balls is that they are all homemade daily from mackerel, to be enjoyed with the fragrant soup made Chinese-style.
The owner is nice and very friendly.
The dishes we’re trying today are the Tom Yum Noodles and Fish Ball.
At first glance, the noodles look just like the ones you would have back in your childhood. Immediately, you can’t wait to taste the wide noodles, the hot flavorful soup with a hint of Chinese herbs, the big chunks of pork, minced pork, fish ball, fish sausage, fried wonton, topped with chopped scallions and oily garlic.
We barely needed to add any condiment, but if you prefer some heat, add the chili to get more spiciness.
The fried wonton is delicious eaten hot and crispy or even a bit soaked in the soup.
The special dipping sauce is spicy, sweet and sour, perfect for dipping the fish ball.
The fish sausage is made from fresh mackerel every day, so it is chewy and spongey. If you want takeaway, the fish sausages are only 40 baht each.
Dip it with the sauce and you’re in heaven.
